Grant Shapps
shadow Housing Minister
visits Hucknall
On Thursday 14th Jan 2010 Grant Shapps, the Conservative Shadow Housing Minister visited Hucknall and Ravenshead to witness for himself the controversial development schemes that have been imposed in the area.
The shadow Minister visited following an invitation by Mark Spencer Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Sherwood and Cllr Mick Murphy the Conservative Candidate at the forth coming by by-election in Hucknall central.
Mick Murphy said Hucknall is facing a number of Housing Developments, these schemes will put an enormous pressure on our all ready over stretched infrastructure. The is already a long wait for a Doctor or Dentist appointment, and getting in and out of Town at Rush Hour is already horrendous
Joe Lonergan, Chairman of Ravenshead Parish Council said Ravenshead has suffered a great deal with the practice of Garden Grabbing, this is when a developer knocks down one property with a large garden and buils several houses on the same site.
Joe went on to say this changes the character of the village and puts pressure on local facilities such as the Doctors Surgery and local roads
Grant Shapps said The present planning system allows for remote planning inspectors to ride rough shod over local people. A Conservative Government would change that. We would introduce a system that properly recognises that local people are best placed to understand their housing needs.
He went on to say New Housing is required, and if this is agreed by local people there should be a system that allows local benefit to pay for infrastructure improvements. The current system is just wrong, it is top down with Government telling us where to develop, it should be bottom up, with communities telling Government what they require
Mark Spencer, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate said A new Conservative Government will scrap Labours Regional Spacial Stratergy. This is the policy that is forcing local Councils to build the wrong housing in the wrong place. We need to give local people the power over local planning decisions
